Ushna Pana Chikitsa: The Ayurvedic Practice of Drinking Warm Water

What is Ushna Pana Chikitsa? Ushna Pana Chikitsa, or the practice of drinking 2 glasses of warm water straight down (as a water ‘flush’), is a fundamental aspect of Ayurvedic daily routine (Dinacharya) and seasonal regimen (Rtucharya).

When is it Done? Ushna Pana Chikitsa is ideally performed during the Brahmi Muhurta, which is approximately 1.5 hours before sunrise. If you are getting up for nervous system balancing practices at Brahmi Muhurta, it would be done then. If you wake up during the Kapha morning hours (6 AM to 10 AM), it is best to do it as early as soon as you awaken (which should be at the beginning of the Kapha hours) before drinking or eating but after oil pulling, brushing the teeth and tongue scraping.

Why is it Done? The benefits of Ushna Pana Chikitsa are numerous:

  • Detoxification: Drinking warm water helps to cleanse the digestive system and flush out toxins.

  • Stimulates Digestion: It aids in kick-starting the digestive fire (Agni), promoting better digestion throughout the day.

  • Hydration: Warm water is easily absorbed by the body, ensuring proper hydration.

  • Balances Doshas: It helps in balancing the Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas, promoting overall health.

How is it Done?

  1. Preparation: Boil water and let it cool to a warm temperature (not too hot).

  2. Timing: Drink the 2 glasses of warm water straight down early in the morning, if you are oil pulling it is done after this and after brushing your teeth and scraping your tongue and definitely before consuming drinks or breakfast.

  3. Consistency: Make it a daily habit to experience the full benefits.
